Mentoring Can Change the World!
The Barayamal eMentoring platform is an online program designed to facilitate the connection of aspiring Indigenous professionals and entrepreneurs with Mentors experienced in their field of interest.
It's an initiative of Barayamal, Australia's Indigenous Business Accelerator - now know as a world leader in Indigenous Entrepreneurship. Barayamal, its Partners and Participants are committed to the professional and entrepreneurial development of Indigenous Australians to help Close the Gap.
According to the latest government employment study, the Indigenous unemployment rate is currently 21%, an increase of 4.3 percentage points since 2008, and is 4 times the current non-Indigenous unemployment rate of 5%. Through disempowerment and lack of opportunity, the Indigenous community in Australia has the highest rate of suicide of any community in the world. By empowering and supporting Indigenous entrepreneurs and professionals we could help re-shape these statistics and our communities..
Our Mentors are a part of an action-orientated network of highly skilled and experienced volunteers that are making a real difference.
Grow your professional and business networks nationwide.
Increase your professional or leadership capability.
Strengthen your cultural awareness and corporate culture.
We ask our mentors to invest a minimum of 10 hours per year (less than one lunch break per month) to mentor Indigenous Australians and make a real difference to help Close the Gap. In addition, you can communicate with your mentee via Skype, email, phone or face-to-face. Whatever works for you...
How does it work?
- Mentee searches for a mentor.
- Submit a mentor request.
- Mentor accepts request (if available).
- Mentoring partnership begins...
How much does it cost?
eMentoring is a free, volunteer-led, community-based mentoring platform! All you need to do is invest the time and energy to help Close the Gap and create a better world for all who live in it.
The search-request model is a model identified by Barayamal as the best approach to establishing a mentoring relationship and is designed to provide a flexible platform for Mentees to find the ideal industry experts best suited to their mentoring needs. However, this model won't necessarily guarantee the success of the professional relationship.
The success of the relationship will depend on many factors, including investment of both Mentors and Mentees of their time and effort.
Importantly the mentoring relationship is not one in which the Mentor provides the Mentee with employment or other assistance of that nature. Employment or engagement is not an expected or desired outcome of the Program.
Mentees need to actively participate in the Program and need to take responsibility for managing the relationship with their Mentor including setting meetings, completing any tasks assigned by the Mentor and following up with the Mentor for additional assistance, meetings and support.
If any Participant experiences any concern with the mentoring relationship you must immediately contact Dean Foley, Founder of Barayamal to discuss your concerns.
Participants in the program acknowledge that the relationship of Mentor and Mentee differs from that of professional adviser and client and as such, any discussion related to legal or financial matters and associated recommendations provided by a Mentor to a Mentee during their relationship cannot relied upon as professional advice.
